I want to change from these traditional sized steps to something more like a set of landings, each probably 18" deep.
I don't think I can do a traditional set of stringers like I have now.
Do I just basically need to sink posts and build 2 small platforms?

Yeah it looks like a box on a box would work well there. Just build the lower platform at 36" and then a smaller one on top. I would probably build the larger platform wider than the upper one also. Good Luck
