We are looking for a durable dry back groutable vinyl tile that mimics ceramic tile.

Any thoughts on Congoleum DuraCeramic as opposed to Mannington, Armstrong or Nafco products? Also, heard that Armstrong has a new tile product line called "Alterna" (more eco-frinedly). Has anyone heard anything about/worked with Alterna?

Thanks...

Sad, but I am responding in my own thread :p

We have decided on groutable DuraCeramic. Does anyone have advice/experience with DuraCeramic on the following:

1. Put DuraCeramic on top of 15 YO vinyl tile in good shape OR rip up and patch/re-do the plywood and then put down the DuraCeramic?

2. How much more do we need to buy for a 'diagonal' install - 5%? 10%?

3. In terms of wear, any warnings on scratches/scuffs/dents - the usual wear issues?

Congoleum Corporation (http://www.congoleum.com/res-products.php?product_line=Duraceramic)

I first saw this product when a coworker was carrying it to his locker. I fell in love!! HA HA It is thick and durable, and resists cracking like your normal ceramic. I have yet to install it but plan to in our laundry room which I am currently remodeling. I asked him what kinda subfloor was needed and he said they put down this rubber mats w/ holes in it. So I would think you would have to tear up the old flooring atleast. Possibly even the subflooring. Just depends and hopefully someone else on here can help.
I think I have seen, this stuff, but I still have to do some more research on it! I did a lot of reading on the site I posted above.

He said he droped a dish on the floor that would have normaly cracked a ceramic tile but nothing happened to the congoleum duraceramic. Hope this helps. Post pics when/if you use this stuff and it is installed. Would love to see the final product!

Thanks for the info on durability. Will post pics after the job is done...if I can figure out how to get them off the camera.

Anyone else out there with info on DuraCeramic, please let me know.
