I had a piece of laminate made up so that it can be mounted to the wall just slightly lower than kitchen counters. My question is how do I hang this 4 1/2 foot desktop? My intentions were to buy or make metal braces for underneath. Just have no idea on how to attach to wall. Thanks!

It is going to take quite hefty (and long) wall braces. Not your normal shelf hanging brackets. Check with sites such as Rockler's to see if they have braces like what you need. We have them holding up about 40 linear feet of laminate top at our church where we have our Audio and lighting set up. They are about 28" on one leg and 23" on the other leg, and are attached directly to the wall over a stud.

Knape Voight makes brackets ( and standards ) for heavy shelving - up to 300+ pounds, depending on your needs..

You may also be able to screw a 2x4 to the wall (both walls if in a corner), set the counter into a bead of adhesive caulk, then fab legs for the front. I did just that in a laundryroom, put a sink on one side and built a 3 sided box to support the other side. Our laundry bin fits right inside the box.
