My Craftsman 917.256550 mower does great on downhill, but hesitates and jerks on the uphill. About to put a new drive belt on it, but was wondering if there is anything else that could be causing this.

it is still hesitating, but not as bad. Also the parking brake is sticking and I have to kick it to get it to release. Can't see what might be causing this. With the old belt it just did not want to climb even a small incline and the new belt it does it just jerks as it is going uphill.

Sounds like you need to service the brake, it appears it may be hanging up. The brake is internal of the hydro tranny but the actuating pins (2) are on the exterior on the right side of the tranny, check them out.
