I have a ~15yr old Ecowater softener that has lived with iron (3) and has been frozen once (house renovations). We get very little iron filtration now even after cleaning it with SuperIronOut. Ok, its time to change the resin.
So I picked up a cuft of resin, some proper gravel (the manuf booklet says nothing about gravel but the plumbing shop that handles Ecowater says its a good idea), and 3 new o-rings for the resin tank. Ive been reading old threads here, and it doesnt sound too bad of a job.
I guess I have to be carefull not to break the bottom distributor when pouring in the gravel.. is there a trick to protecting it ?
The shop mentioned about making sure the pipe stays centered as I fill the resin.. is there a trick to this ? I guess the top distributor isnt going to fit back on if the pipe isnt centered.
Finally (and perhaps most important ?).. how do you clean out the resin/gravel/pipes in the resin tank after you've been handing all this stuff.. in preparation for service ? I know we're not talking about surgical clean stuff here, but is it not important to try and get out any bacteria/etc that might be on stuff before you run your drinking water through it ?
Thanks for any tips !

(bump)
.. I meant to question cleaning it with Bleach.
I didnt find any threads telling people to clean their hands, so maybe bacteria just cant grow there in the resin tank ?

To clean out the old resin, I use a shop vac. If the resin tank is not inside the brine tank, you can simply turn it over and use a hose to wash out the old resin. When rebedding, tape off the top of the distributor tube to prevent gravel or resin from getting in. The gravel will not hurt the distributor tube. If the tube is not centered, don't worry about it. It will center itself when a backwash occurs.

Just a follow up..
Did the resin job today. Took all the hardware off of the softener.. shopvac'd the existing salt pellets out to the water level then turned it over and washed stuff out with a garden hose. I was able to get the resin tank out of the brine tank, so that made things alot easier.
As it turned out, I found mention in the manual with the manuf. recommending 2oz of bleach into the brine tank (with the start-up water and salt in there) to ensure that things are clean. Did a regen right away, and it seems good now.. perhaps a tiny bit of metallic taste.. Im gonna wait till the next regen before I worry about it.
