We have a very large (8' high, 12' across), old (at least 25 years) forsythia that didn't bloom this year for the first time. It got maybe 10 yellow blossoms and now is leafing out. Is this a sign that it's past its prime or just one of those things?
My three newer forsythias, planted 3 years ago, didn't flower much either. Our neighbor's across the street looked great a couple weeks ago.

Hi lmacmil,
Most people prune forsythia by shaping it into balls or squares, thus cutting the tips of the branches and stunting the shrubs. The proper way to rejuvenate and prune a forsythia is to cut up to 1/3 of the oldest trunks flush to the ground each year for 3 years.

Forsythia prefer full sun and well drained soil. Consider topdressing with a 1/2" to 1" of compost or compost mixed with manure.

I have cut off some of the oldest trunks in the past but not for several years. Guess it's past due for a proper pruning. Thanks.
