Hi,
just wondering if $4,200 is a good price for a Trane xr14 and variable speed furnace. I got one quote for $6,500 and then my friend down the street said he works for a company that will do it for $4,200. (I guess its their employee discount) I don't know alot about HVAC so was just wondering how good of deal this is.
thanks!

1st install is the key not cost. A good install will outlast and use less electricity than a bad install. 2nd Id go with at least a 15 seer.

Being that you are in TX, and your summers are hot, I'd go with the higher SEERS..
Check with your local electric company and see what they offer for rebates on each SEERS unit, and see if it makes it the same or what not as the 13 SEERS.

What size is the system?
As Airman said, "install is the key not cost".
Do you want good or cheap? Pick one, you are unlikely to get both.
