--------------posting again since I accidentally selected 'thumbs up' as my icon prev istead of a question mark !:(

Hi,

I am totally new to anything to do with painting - so pls bear that in mind if my question my seem extremely primitive

I have these dining chairs which have their leg description as follows - Leg: Steel, Pigmented epoxy powder coating

I recently bought them and want to start using them only if I know I can safely paint the legs in black to match the dining table legs which are matte black. I bought them presuming I can do so...

Can anyone please advise me on how I shud go about this..or is it even advisable?

Thanks a ton in advance!

Welcome to the forums!

I assume you plan to use a spray can? solvent based paints will work but I wouldn't recomend using latex. Any paint you apply won't wear as well as the powder coat.

Lightly sand the legs with 220 grit sandpaper [can be finer but not coarser], wipe clean with a damp thinner rag and they should be ready for paint.

Painting over powder coating isn't that simple, the paint will not stick. Sand as suggested with 220, Wipe with Willbond, buy Rustoleum Primer and prime your legs, and then Rustoleum black if that is your color. The powder coating is very hard to go over with conventioal spray bombs, the lacquer or latex just won't stick, and it will alligator off in short order. I would suggest oil based paint if you were using a custom color, but Rustoleum and it's fish oil base, will serve here.
