I have a new to me boat, running a 5.0 mercruiser. Starts great, but will not ease into gear, some grinding and sometimes quits. If I throw it full throttle it picks up fine and rns until I pull it to idle, then it quits, but will restart right away. Not sure what is causing it...

I would look at the shift interupter switch. The switch is located on the motor wear the cables meet. The switch is there to cut the ignition as the gears are shifted into and out of gear.

Could also be an out of adjustment or stretched shift cable. You adjust it at the same location on the shift linkage on top of the engine. The shift interruptor switch is a stainless flip lever looking type of thing. Forcing in and out of gear could lead to damage in your outdrive so be sure and nail this down before it gets expensive.
