i was trying to install a gate at the top of my stairs for the 1 year old. on one side there is sheet rock and the other railing.
Here is the issue. I have sheet rock not plaster so the sheet rock is a lot softer. at the top of the gate i have to put 2 screws through the sheet rock. In order to have the screws stay in the sheet rock I had to first pre drill holes, then I installed the plastic screw locks that you hammer into the sheet rock, then I tried screwing in both screws. The first one went in beutiful and held the bracket in tight. The second one I had an issue with. When ever i tried to screw in the screw the plastic lock keeps turning in the sheet rock. I even tried a different position but the plastic locks dont hold well in sheet rock. I repaired the holes in the wall with spackle but I am looking for a way to keep these screws in the sheetrock? any input????

There are a variety of sheetrock anchors so one possibility is simply try a different type. One in particular is screwed itself into the sheetrock then you screw your screw into it.It sounds like you used a traditional anchor and the hole was just slightly too big so it spun on you.Depending on where you are buying your hardware, you'll find different selections.Beyond plastic are a variety of types but they are either more involved or aren't designed to take the screws you have.A hardware store salesperson can help you decide.

The other alternative is to get screws long enough to go through the rock into a stud in the wall. This is assuming there is one where you are putting the gate.At the top corner of stairs there should be one.

It would be best to use longer screws and attach it to a stud.

My thought was to mount it into a stud but this is not an option. The first stud starts on one of the stairs so that is out of the question. I talked to my brother in law and he said the sheetrock locks that the Gate MFG supplies are junk. I am going to head the hardware store and talk to someone about getting some better ones. thanks for replies!!!
