I am planning to install vinyl siding around my 2' x 6' chimney and I need to purchase a chimney chase cover so water does not get behind the siding. I have looked around and a stainless steel chase cover is around $350 - $500. Is that a normal price? Where is it best to buy?

I dont want to install a lower quality chase cover because it may just rust in a few years resulting in replacing it again. Are there other inexpensive, long-lasting solutions besides stainless steel chase covers when installing vinyl siding on chimneys or is this it?

Stainless is expensive, and the price is not out of line. And if it gives you peace of mind, so much the better. I have had a fabricator make several for me of galvanized for about $70 and aluminum for about $120.

Wont galvanized or aluminum rust after a few years. I just got off the phone with a metal shop and they just told me that aluminum wont rust. Is that true?

Aluminum won't rust..but it can oxidize..not really an issue unless you live near salt water or an area subject to acid rain.

Heavy gauge galvanized will rust over time, esp if any screws/rivet holes are not sealed or the wrong type of metal is used in the fasteners.

Properly painting either galv or alum will delay either of their problems. Proper types of fasteners also must be used as disimilar metals can cause corrosion.

Usually, how long will it take the aluminum to oxidize? Will that change the color or beauty of it? The metal shop said their aluminum chase covers come in different colors.

I live in northern NJ. Do many homes choose this aluminum material to chase cover their chimneys?

Ahh, so the shop is probably using prepainted aluminum. Probably a baked on long lasting finish similar to that put on aluminum trim for a house. Oxidation is a non issue in that case, well..mostly. Time will take its toll on anything. You could ask if they paint it after forming, or if they have any touchup paint for rivets and fasteners.

Couldn't tell you anything about what is common in NJ.

be sure to put a two by four band around the top of chimney with metal trim to get a drip edge over the vinyl
