i need to build a simple table that is roughy 8' long by no more than 3' 6'' and about 4' high. it doesnt need to be ornate in any way, but it must be fairly solid. i was thinking of using 2x4's and a piece of 1/2'' pine for the surface. i have some carpentry experience, but not a great amount. i need advice on constructing the joints at the legs.

How refined does it need to be? Is this like a utility bench in your garage or a piece of furniture for the house?

With 2x4 legs I would assume it's for a shop. The table would be a lot sturdier if the legs are all tied together [not just attached at the top] If you put a shelf under the table it will both make the table sturdier and give you extra storage space.
