Hi,

The stove in my apartment is an old Wedgewood with six burners. I suspect that the pilot lights waste a lot of gas because the stove is always hot to the touch. I would like to have them disabled so I can use matches or a hand-held lighter instead. Is it possible to have the pilot lights disabled or blocked? Is this something I can do myself, or should I call an appliance repair shop for this?

Sure you can....follow from the pilot (the tubing) back to the valve and turn it or them off with a screwdriver. If the oven is equipped with a standing pilot(meaning it is always on) you will need to leave it on, unless you won't need your oven. You cannot manually light a pilot equipped oven due the safety valve. I see you are in the Bay Area, call PG&E and they will do it for you.
