Hi, I have an RJ31X jack in my Vista20P that I'd like to convert to an RJ11 jack so I can hook up a DSL modem to that jack. Can someone explain to me if this is possible/easy and if so provide me a quick run-down on how to do this?
-- Just in case it helps you know why I might want to do this I am considering:
Taking the RJ31X connector from the alarm system and hooking that to an RJ31X->RJ11 adapter, hooking that up to the ABN Broadband Adapter (NextAlarm), hooking the ABN into the DSL modem, and hooking that DSL modem back into what used to be the old RJ31X jack). I will use a splitter on the new RJ11 jack so that I can connect up an answering machine. The DSL modem, ABN Broadband Adapter, and answering machine will be on a battery backup.
The advantage of this setup are that Nextalarm claims they can notify me/dispatch police/or do something when the internet connection goes down. If the connection goes down it's either the phone line, internet, or power. Hopefully I can distinguish between internet problems and phone line problems by calling the phone line and seeing if I get an answering machine message. If the power has been out for a really long time, I guess I'm screwed-- I can call a neighbor to find out if the power is out. But then again, if it's been out a really long time there's a good chance the alarm system has no power either.
All this is my attempt to circumvent Alarmnet fees. Of course, if someone can tell me how to get cheap monitoring maybe I don't need to go through all the above hassles..

You don't have to go through all of that.
You just replace the incoming lines from your telco on the RJ-31x with the lines from your broadband telephone adaptor. At that point the broadband adaptor becomes your telephone source and feeds through the RJ31x to supply all of the downstream phone jacks.
All you need is a standard phone cable you strip the wires at one end and attach them to the RJ31x (red to red; green to green), then plug it into your broadband.

Thanks MrRonFl! I'm actually not using VOIP-- the only reason I'd be using the ABN Broadband Adapter is to hook up to NextAlarm. In the area near the panel there is no close phone jack except the RJ31X and so I thought that that would be a good place to plug the DSL modem in.

Oh, ok, I see what you are after. Since you are plugging the alarm cable into the ABN, you can simply swap the RJ-31x for a normal jack and do whatever you want with the line. If you want to leave it in place to futureproof, just connect a rj-11jack to the brown and grey wire terminals next to the jack on the RJ-31x.
