We just moved into our house in january, and I tried to use the swamp cooler yesterday. It worked fine, but there's a very short black pipe that sticks out the bottom of the cooler (not sure if its a pipe, it kind of looks like one from the ground) and its dripping water on the roof. Are swamp coolers supposed to drain like that? What can I do to fix it, even just jury rig it, just to get me through the next few days of 100 degree weather, until it can be fixed properly? Please help!! :madhell:

Not sure about the bigger ones, but in the smaller units that is an overflow pipe for when the water gets too high. You may need to take the cover off and check.
It could also be where the purge(?) pump drains. Those constantly pump a little water out to help reduce mineral build up.
Haven't had to turn my garage unit on yet..just 80's so far here.

Sound's like you're getting too much water in the sump. There is a float that the water intake connects to that is supposed to stop the sump for getting too much water. You probably need to adjust the float (bend the metal arm down a little). What happens is the pump sucks some water out to wet the pads, so the float goes down and it re-fills the lost water, then when you turn off the cooler, the pads drain back into the sump and it overflows. The water level should be about a half inch to an inch below the overflow plug.
