First off - sorry for double-posting, but I originally posted this in a different forum on here, but found this probably the better place to post:

I'm currently building a house that's just about to the end of the framing stage. I'm meeting with the plumber in a few days before he begins roughing in the pipes. I'm interested in having a whole-house water filtration system so that I don't have to have seperate filters at sinks and also to help with things like laundry, potential stains in fixtures, ice makers, etc.

Water will be supplied by a (yet to be drilled) well.

I'm assuming I'll probably also need a softener, but I'll do a little more research in the water softener forum.

I wasn't sure exactly where "water filtration" belonged, so forgive me if this is posted in the incorrect forum.

i take it this is a pier and beam foundation? if not the softner should have been thought of before concrete was poured.

but on to your question about filters.

the best thing to do is have a water quality expert out to asses your waters condition and tell you what you need for what you dont want in your system, but since there is no well yet that will be a little difficult

The foundation is a full walkout basement. Anyway, supply comes in through the front foundation wall, into the utility room. I don't see any problems getting a softener + filtration installed into the entry of the system.

I do understand that ideally you need to get the water tested to know exactly what to filter out. However, are there any solutions out there that follow the 80/20 rule (good for 80 percent of scenarios)?

I've briefly talked to some of the neighbors down the road who have indicated to me that the water is discolored (I live in the south, lots of clay), fairly hard, and doesn't necessarily taste great without treatment. I obviously want to eliminate any sedment and minerals (especially if it's heavy in iron), but even more so I want to remove any coloration or bad taste.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Before deciding on any filtration, it's best to know the water test results. I've never heard of the 80/20 rule. Besides, I wouldn't want that to decide what I'm going to drink.

Yup - I hear you. I'm going to meet with a couple of well drillers this week. I'll report back in a couple of weeks when I've got some water to test! :D
