Hi Everyone, I have wood frame double hung windows that you can pull the sash out to clean. Aluminum track holds it in place. The springs make it go up and down. They are tied to a wire cable of sorts. No weights. These cables are broken. PLease tell me how to fix them. Where do I buy this cable. I have taken one of the windows out. Is there a place I can take it to. I called some and they all want to come out and charge too much. Thanks, Katie:D:

you need to post the pic to a photo sharing site like Photobucket or flickr, then copy the url into the box that pops up.

Thanks tow guy. Now what are these window types called and where do I get the wire and end pieces to fix it? Thanks for any help. Take Care, Katie:D

That is called a balance, it is supposed to make the window weigh nothing, or counterbalance it. On older windows(from the 60's-70's), one end of the spring hooks into the aluminum track(rarely breaks), the other end hooks into a metal or plastic tab at the bottom of the sash, this usually breaks. Hard to describe how to fix it, but I usually reach up in the slot on the side of the sash with a small, long hook tool and try to snag the spring. Then pull it down and secure it. I have accumulate those plastic clips over the years, which you may have a hard time finding. A screw will likely hold the spring. If it is a cable as in the pic, same thing.
