I did a search and didn't find the answer I was looking for...I'm starting the second year of my asparagus bed and I need some suggestions on what fertilizer to use this Spring. I thought I heard somewhere that I shouldn't use a fertilizer with a high content of nitrogen...is that correct? I don't have access to any "natural" fertilizers so I have to buy them from a store. Thanx for any suggestions and keep up the great work on a great site!!!

Per this site...http://www.extension.umn.edu/yardandgarden/ygbriefs/H204asparagus.html
Each spring before spears appear, work a balanced garden fertilizer such as 10-10-10 or 12-12- 12 into the soil at the rate of approximately 1 to 1½ pounds per 100 square feet of garden. You can also add some well-rotted manure or compost.
There should be similar info at whatever extension service covers for your area.
I noticed it varied by region, OH was different than CO for instance.

Natural and organic fertilizers can be purchased at almost every garden center including the big box stores these days. This might help you to select organic and natural fertilizers.

And while we are on the subject of asparagus, up until last year I wouldn't eat the stuff with YOUR mouth! But I was at a restaurant once where only the entree was listed and with "vegetable of the day" listed. Surely it wouldn't be asparagus! It was, lightly salted, lightly grilled and crisp. Ooooh, what a treat.
Our patch has been highly successful using mushroom compost which we can get locally.

Grilled, broiled, (or even sauted in a pan), with some olive oil, sea salt and ground pepper is the BOMB!
Put it on a plate or baking dish, drizzle with oil, add salt and pepper. Then grill, saute, or broil quickly.
Still makes yer pee stink though.
