Doors and Windows - Aluminum window

I have a 72" X 36" aluminum sliding window. the stationary side glass has been broken. How do you replace the glass? I have not found a way to take it apart and I can't see a way of puting the glass in place if it must be at 1/8 inch larger then the metal frame. Help anyone? Thanks. Bob

there is probably a rubber gasket that holds the glass in. If not than the stationary sash has to be removed.

Removing the glass is a matter of how the manufacturer built their window. If you know the manufacturer (which is unlikely) call them and ask. Otherwise, on the inside of the window look for as hrjrkr said there may be a rubber gasket around the parimeter of the glass.

More often, it is semi rigid vinyl not rubber, but again that depends on the window manufacturer. Use a putty knife to pry the glass stop away start at a corner and work your way down. Most glass stops have "a barbed profile which grips the
aluminum. Be careful not to break the glass stop or you'll be looking to replace it next, and that will be harder to find. Even if and after the glass stop is removed, you will likely need a heat gun to loosen "melt" the sealant that the glalss was likely embedded in to seal the outside.

If the glass has a marine glazing boot around the edge of the glass, (it's a marine glazing boot if the gasket on each side of the glass is not removable... a marine glazing boot is shaped like a "C" and wraps around the edge of the glass. You have to disassemble the frame to remove it) then it's more than likely that you need to remove the entire sash from the frame, then the rails and stiles separate at the corners when you remove the 4 screws holding them together.

But as mentioned, there are various ways that they were assembled.

And the glass must be exactly the right size. 1/8" bigger than the frame is not right.

Thanks for your help, I dismentled the frame. It has rubber gasket as you mentioned. Now I going to replace it, hopefully! Bob
