anyone have comments from experience with the 2.5 and 3
hp compressors..?? i need one for grinding occasionally
as well as nailers and auto air tools.... think I want an oiled rig
that will not wimp out....maybe Makita or Dewalt or Porter Cable.

You will want a oiler for sure. The oilless are noisy and you will be rebuilding it in a few years. If you will be using it for grinding, you will need VOLUME. So look for at least a 20 gallon tank, as the pancake or hot dog type won't suffice.
Makita is a good brand, just like the others you mentioned.
