looking at replacing old sears unit with a new carrier dual fuel heat pump . will be using the existing propane furnace as backup since its only about 6 years old. Was quoted a 25HCB324A003 13 seer 2ton unit for $4200. Any help or recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

I would Look at at least a 15 seer.

Why are you replacing the old unit, and what is its SEER/HSPF rating?

Whatever you do, get 3 quotes that include different brands.

its a 8 seer central air unit. I have no idea how old it is. Its an old Sears unit with their name on it. So how long has it been since Sears has put something out with their name on it? I did find out that the service manual was printed in 1978 for this particular unit that I have. My house is only 1025 sq ft, so will going with a higher seer would I be better off . Or is it that much different between a 13 and 14 seer unit for my size house?

You are on the right track but your overall strategy is wrong.

2 reasons

first a 13 SEER Heat Pump will not qualify for the Fed Govt tax credit. and it would be a big mistake to leave that on the table.

second, propane is expensive plus you live in an area/climate that is perfect for a HP along with reasonable electric rates. chuck the propane furnace altogether.

one downside is you will need to have your electric service checked to see if it can handle backup electric strip heat. it may need upgrading.

I would expect a qualifying two ton HP system with var spd air handler to cost between $5-6 K. The govt will give you up to $1500 tax credit.

The qualifying standard is 15 SEER, 12.5 EER, 9 HSPF.

I can make some recommendations if you like.

Take a look at the link for fuel comparison calculator. Plug in your costs and efficiency. It will wake you up.

IMO
Good Luck!

That price is about right for my neck of the woods - new york metro area - I would expect slightly lower costs in NC. Get 2 more bids.
