I have vertical blinds and the veins are positioned so that they have a limited opening (20-30 degrees) and shut tight. I would like to have them open more (90 degrees or so perpendicular to the window) but can't twist the stems to that angle. Any ideas why this is and suggestions on how to fix it? I googled it and all I come up with is that the veins should be facing the same way, which they are. I don't think the stems are broken but I can twist some of them and not others. Thanks.

No, I don't see any name brand and they were already installed so I don't know the brand or installation company. I wonder if the stems were twisted too much; some won't twist at all.

are they not opening because your running out of bead chain? like this shades has been over pulled and the beaded chain has skipped too many times in the gear? or is this the kind where you spin a wand to get them to rotate?

if its the chain and like i said you are running out, then it may be possible to pull the chain a bit extra when they are in the closed position.. this will cause the chain to skip back to its original position and will leave behind enough chain to turn the gear allowing your vanes to open more..

does that make sense?

Thanks for the info on the bead chain type but it is the wand type. When I spin the wand, the vanes open to let in some light but not all the way open like normal.

have you by chance taken off these vanes or a previous owner, and then reinstalled them? without the vanes on, your clips may have the ability to rotate more than the needed 180 degrees. If this is the case and the vanes were attached when the clips were rotated in the closed/(white showing)open position, this could cause this sort of problem.

I would say remove the vanes with the help of a old credit card slipped between the clip and the vane (the side of the clip with the tab not hole). Then go turn the wand as if you were closing them, do you have the ability to well exceed what you would have if the vanes were on and stopping you from going any further? If so we found our problem. reinstall the vanes when the clips are rotated that extra 90 degrees from the previous closed position.

if not, the there is a rod that runs through the entire rod. This rod needs to be slipped out , all the clips rotated, and then reinserted. not so easy

In trying to solve this problem, I did remove the vanes one at a time, flip them 180 degrees and then put each one back after flipping it (ie I didn't take all the vanes off at once). But I'll try your suggestion. I hope it's not a rod problem.

BLD, thanks for your help. I tried spinning the wand more open (ie kept spinning towards the way in which it wasn't stopped/stuck) even though it kept making clicking sounds and seemed like it might break and was able to get it to open more. So glad that it wasn't more than that or broken.

The blinds only open a miniscule amount. I think the gear is stripped. Is this something I can buy and replace, or have to replace the whole carrier ? I can still use the string pull to open the blinds but prefer the more "private" opening with the verticals
thank you
