I am looking to install t&g in a couple of rooms in my cabin. The cabin already has sheetrock and cheap old paneling. I wanted to install the t&g vertically, but will I get a firm hold from the sheetrock and paneling or do I need to add strips to nail to?

Unless you intend to find the studs and nail through the sheetrock and paneling I wouldn't trust nails to hold the T&G.
Sheetrock (the paneling doesn't really matter) will hold nails alone.

I am somewhat confused by your post that states nailing won't hold the t&g but then you state that sheetrock will hold nails alone??
How much of a difference will it make if I also use some sort of adhesive to glue the t&G to the wall in addition to nailing. Keeping in mind that my cabin only has 8' ceilings and I should be able to hit the studs at the top and bottom on every board as well.

Typo:sheetrock will NOT hold nails alone.
Sorry.
You need to go through to studs for nails to hold.
Construction adhesive might help as well as nailing into studs anywhere you can reach them.
But sheetrock alone will not hold a nail.You can pull it right back out.

To hang the boards vertically, you should either remove the drywall and install short pieces of 2xs horizontally [between studs] or add furring stripps horrizontally over the drywall. The advantage to removing the drywall is you can update insulation and wiring if needed.
Adhesive will help if you don't do either of the above but IMO nails are better than glue and as stated, nails won't hold in sheetrock.
