there is a fuse in the starter selonoid, sounds like it may be the culprit.

is it in neutral ? check fuse.

if all good, can you jump the starter solenoid to make it start? if so solenoid is bad.

Your solenoid may be bad or you may not have switched current going to it to activate it. There should be a small wire that gets hot(has electricity) when you turn your ignition to start. Use a current light tester to check for that current. You can get those for a few bucks at a parts store or a Walmart.

If you are ok there but the solenoid isn't passing current to the starter, the solenoid is usually bad. Since you aren't getting a spark, though, check for current at the solenoid wire.

If you aren't getting current to the solenoid and in having no spark, the two could be related.

sorry I should say that I am getting a little spark on the first pull or turn-over but after that nothing! CDI?

I wouldn't jump to that conclusion. For one thing those suckers aren't cheap and no one seems to have a good way to test them other than replace the old one.

First I would get it to spin the engine over with the electric starter. Then you would be good on a lot of the electrical circuits. That may hit some ignition problems.

Your problem could be in the battery cable/connections, circuits to the CDI (or CDI box) the coil, plug wire, or the plug itself. Since we're talking about an older machine the range of possibilities gets a little larger.
