We are having some problems deciding on how to paint our rounded corners on the main floor. The back main level of our house is an open concept with the kitchen and family room all in one area. We have dark charcole colour tiles and our cabinets are a darker brown. This can be seen from the family room which has light cream wall to wall carpet with a natural stained fireplace mantel. Our Furniture in the family room is dark brown and couch is a dark deep olive green. (We will be eventually be replacing this with lighter brown leather couch and chair) Do we use one colour throughout the back of the house and carry it down the hall or can we use different colours in the kitchen and family room? When we paint rounded corners do we change the colour when we hit a 90 degree angle or do you change the colour on the rounded part? Any colour suggestions as well are greatly appreciated! Actually any advise at all. :)

pmgca is right, pictures always help.
But if I understand you correctly, I can tell you that when we paint such corners we take the common area color and wrap it around the curved part of the corner into the adjoining room and then tape off a clean line. I would not cut the color in the curved part, carry it one way or another. Regarding the colors, as long as they harmonize you would not have to keep the walls the same color throughout.

Hi qdslse,
Hummm.... I don't agree with this....
This is an interesting advice that may help for the "how to" stage (and if the user decides to paint following a straigh line), however, the color selection & coordination goes one step forward of the masking tape :D We have different techniques including corners, transitions, texturing, shadows, etc
Lets see the pictures and the spaces....

Hi Folks,
Sorry for the delay in posting pics as we could not find our firewire. Anyways, here are some photos of the kitchen and living room. If you could suggest both paint colours as well as technique for painting rounded corners that would be a huge help. Keep in mind, the red curtains will not be used once painting is complete. One last favour, can you please give me your opinion on our mantel. Should it be stained to a darker finish to match furniture/kitchen cupboards as this is an open concept.

Can you post the pictures without slideshow / flash?
In order to set an image here follow these easy steps-->
1 - upload your picture to a free online photalbum like Photobucket (http://photobucket.com/)or Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/) , for example
2 - Look for the link of your picture (usually, photoalbums provide a "link for a forum" script)
3 - Click the image icon above--> copy the link of your picture--> Presto!! :D

Hi Tobypoo,
There is a concept that works nicely in this cases--> don't think in terms of rooms but instead, think about walls and volumes. Therefore, don't stop the color of one room in the corner, paint the whole wall volume with that color
In this way, you will create an color integrated space, based on soft transitions
Fireplace--> yes, a dark stain will look great!!

Thank you for your help. So dont break it up by rooms but carry colour through? Do you have any suggestions on what colour to use?

Hi Tobypoo,
You're welcome! :D
Yes, for example --> picture # 1 --> wall on the right side--> let the color of this wall enter inside the kitchen!!
The fireplace and these nice cabinets are asking for earth colors.
(The following colors are from the Sherwin Williams (http://www.sherwin-williams.com/)catalogue)
I'd start with just one wall using SW 6040 Less Brown or 6039 Poised Taupe or 6082 Cobble Brown. From there, you can go all the way to a 6073 Perfect Greige or a 6080 Utterly Beige
