Patching and Plastering - Fixing torn drywall paper

I'm removing wallpaper that's been up for a good thirty years. In some places, the paper came off very easy, but pulled off old primer and drywall paper with it. Here's a link to a picture:

Any tips on how to prep it for new wallpaper? Some of the brown spots you see are intact drywall where the primer was pulled off with the old wallpaper, but in some of those spots some drywall paper got peeled off as well.

I would suggest a skim coating of drywall mud and sand (unless you are really good with the application) to provide a smooth surface for the new paper. You would then have to prime paint and then apply sizing before applying the new paper.

Anywhere the gypsum is exposed, should have a coat of oil base primer applied. This will prevent the moisture in the joint compound from wrinkling up the surrounding paper. Nap gave good advice for the rest of it:thumbup:
