I'm trying to frame for an attic ladder for my garage ceiling. There is no drywall or floor in yet, just floor joists. They are 2x10 spaced on 12". How can I install a header in that space if I don't really have room to hammer in the nails?
I guess joist hangers would be a little easier since the nails would be a lot shorter, but I'm not sure. Do joist hangers support as well as actually nailing to the header itself?

Toe nail or use a palm nailer.

Yes, hangers are stronger. Here: LUS/HUS Double Shear Joist Hangers (http://www.strongtie.com/products/connectors/LUS-HUS.asp) They also make double member hangers, sold at most lumberyards and box stores. The nails are 1-1/2" long. Go to Lowe's site and enter: install attic stairs, in the search box. Be safe, GBR
