Hi :),
I would like to install wood blinds in my bedroom. I have 2 windows, seperated by a 2" deep jamb(? not sure of terminology). Each window has a 1&1/2" wooden molding around it. I currently have 1/2" micro blinds on each window that are mounted on that wood frame and fit very well inside it. The wood blinds I like only come in 2" slats and mount by placement of a box on the sides.

The windows are set into the wall in a 6" deep alcove. What I'm wondering is, can the 2" slatted blinds be mounted on the 1&1/2 wood molding, or would they need to be mounted by drilling into the plaster, thus having them in front of the molding? Don't want to order the wrong size; I know there'll be a difference depending on where they're hung.

Hope I explained this clearly. Thanks for any responses!!

Is there a reason you can't mount it inside (which would be a better option and you also have plenty of room there) rather than on the trim or wall? I personally like blinds better inside mount if possible and then the slats won't be sticking out, either.

Definitely 2" slats, and I question why you can't install them in the 6" extension. It would look so much better.

Thanks for the replies, Chandler and Shadeladie.
I can install them on the 6" extension, but they won't look as nice because that wood molding around the window is painted as trim. Having the blinds sit inside it is esthetically nicer looking, like a photo in a frame. If they're mounted in front of the molding (and thus in the plaster of the wall) they won't be 'framed', and will be further away from the window, which is not really to my taste. But if the measurements are such that the 2" blinds can't be mounted on the moldings, then guess that's what I'll have to do.

Sorry, but you've lost me. Either you're not understanding us or we're not understanding you. This "box" that you refer to, do you mean a box shaped bracket? This would get attached to the inside sides, and the blind slides in. Or do you mean there is no inside mount option for the blinds you want? I've never heard of that. Please explain.

Sorry for losing you:( Yes, the box is a box shaped bracket, mounted on the side as opposed to brackets mounted above the blind.

My windows are set in 6" deep from the room wall (picture an alcove) and seperated from each other by a 3" deep piece of painted wood. (So the windows can each have a blind with side mounts.) The windowsill is a deep one. I don't know the exact terminology for all the parts (if I did, I probably wouldn't need to post here), but the molding I referred to is set flush against the window on both sides, top, & bottom. It's 1&1/2" deep. That leaves 4&1/2" more of depth which is just plaster wall. So the question is: can I mount 2" wooden blinds using the box bracket on a 1&1/2 molding. Will the blinds hit the window when opened, or can the bracket be screwed on so that it's away from the window giving enough room for the blinds to be open fully?

Hope this explains it better. If not, is it possible to upload a photo?

Ah-ha, gotcha! All the deep windows I've ever seen had wide moldings that covered the entire depth, which is why I was thrown off. :wall:
I'd probably want to attach a small piece of wood at the top of the plaster, so the bracket could be installed further in.
Hopefully an installer will see this and give you a better suggestion.

any chance you could post a picture?

I would love to help, I hate it when people make bad decisions with their blinds.

Very nice of you:) Seems I'm not allowed to post attachments. But I understand it all better now. If the 2" slat can't be mounted on the wood molding because it's 1&1/2" deep then the brackets will be placed in front of the moldings, mounted into the plaster. The slats when fully horizontal will be as close to the window as possible, wherever the bracket is mounted. I guess it all depends where the mounting holes on the bracket are.

Now I just have to measure correctly!!

i would still urge you to upload a picture to say flickr or tinypic and provide us with a link.. You and your windows may thank you for it.. In many cases you may still want to order them inside the molding even though the depth isn't all there.. Modifications to the valance may make all the difference in how your shade looks..

for example.. even if you dont have a 2 inch depth, often you would still want to order a valance "outside mount" with reductions in the length of the return piece that would normally go to the wall.

or if your going in to the drywall and your inside ends of each shade are not going to be flush to a wall like the outsides, then you may want to also orer the valance a special way.

anyway, a pic would really make my day lol

I do appreciate your offer of help! However, this is more complicated than I thought it'd be, so am going to get a professioal in to measure and advise.

Cheers,
