I want to buy some shrubs for my garden but I am unsure if the quality of the shrubs are better at a nursery than going to Home Depot or Lowes. Are they the same or different?

I even have shrubs at my local Costco for even cheaper prices. Are these all the same quality?

Generally speaking, and I do mean GENERALLY, plant material at the big box stores are close in quality to those at most garden centers and nurseries. I've found the best way to help insure you get quality plant material from a big box store is to purchase them within the first 2 days of their arrival as most of these places have poor maintenance of their plant material. I ask the staff when they get their deliveries and try and arrive within 24 hours to make my purchases.

Lisa, you are very welcome! I've purchased at K-Mart, Home Depot and Lowe's as well as local nurseries and mail order. For mail order you can check references here and even search by state or plant material.

I knew a woman who used to work in the garden dept at the HD I worked at. She was looking for a change, so she went to work at a nearby commercial nursery. Talking to her later, she said they delivered to KMart, HD, Lowes, as well as local garden centers and Mom and Pop stores.

As Newt said..its all about timing...in busy seasons, they may get deliveries every day/night for different products. Our garden dept had to put people on overnites to handle unloading trucks and stocking during the spring.
