 Cement slab of our home was originally covered with 9 by 9 asbestos tiles (VAT) and previous owners had carpet installed over these and in doing so the tack strips to hold carpet were installed on perimeter so that the whole perimeter of room has loose VAT tiles. We wish to remove carpet and install either hardwood flooring or other laminant flooring-- naturally without disturbing the rest of VAT tiles that remain. How do we prepare slab in order to install hardwood or laminants over remaining old VAT flooring?

Not sure if that its a good idea to leave them down. What if you install your new floor and they start coming up. Could cause some loose boards or what not.

Here is my opinion. Tear them all up and put new flooring down. I had these same tiles down in my kitchen. They were chipping, coming up tearing our socks. The wife was expecting and I was like I can't have a baby crawling around on these things. So I tore them all up. 250+ sq ft of it. I had my uncle come down who has been around this stuff and has worked w/ it. He said that I would have to take every tile, crush it to a powder and snort it, to even have a chance of getting asbestos. So I just wore a mask and tore them up.

But this is my opinion and I had a subfloor though and not a concrete slab.
