Hi,

I installed a water filtering system onto the main waterline coming into my home. It consists of 3, 10" filter housings and cartridges. the housings are clear, so inspecting the cartridges is as easy as a glance. well, I did glance at my cartridges and noticed on one of the carbon block filters, algae just starting to bloom. Should this be a concern for me? my water is supplied through the city/parish so seeing algae blooming on the carbon block filter cartridge a bit of a surprise. I installed the system to remove sediment and reduce the TOC (total organic carbon) in the water. Maybe the bloom is because I have the unit in an area where full sunlight is present all day. But SHOULD SEEING ALGAE CAUSE CONCERN?Beer 4U2

well, noone has an answer for me so I decided to enclose the filter housings inside a insulation board- box I constucted. its about an inch thick fiberglass with a foil backing. the kind used for home air conditioners.:coffee: I figure doing this will block the sunlight out completely. hopefully, if the miniscule green flecks on one of the carbon filters is actually algae, the lack of light may reverse the growth of it.. I'll check on it in a week.:thinker:

Do you have a chlorine test kit? What is the order of the three filters?

Even though some are on city water systems, their levels of chlorine are negligent ot non-existent. Do keep your housings out of sunlight. You will need to sanitize your system and put in new filters.

Yes, if you actually SEE the algae, that is a problem. Not sure how much of a health concern it is, but I would clean it out.

well folks! enclosing the filter housings so they are in the dark cured the problem completely. no more green flecks of what appears to have been algae. Im glad. thanks for the help.Beer 4U2
