I am the new owner of an old vintage stove that looks to be in fabulous shape except for one thing. It is a 1950 Magic Chef with four burners and separate side by side broiler and oven. There is no pilot light. I can get the four burners and broiler ignited with a Bic lighter. When I turn the knobs I hear the gas. However, I am unable to light the oven. When I turn both the temperature knob and oven knob on and put the lighter on the "light here" hole I see the flame flicker, but I don't hear gas and the oven does not ignite. How can I tell if there is a particular stoppage and where? Many thanks, Fuma

Hello Fuma. Welcome to Gas Appliances topic and our Do-It-Yourself Web Site.

Some of the 50's era models from that time period did have pilots while others did not. To determine if that model has a pilot light assembly, look in the back left side of the burner. There will be a pilot assembly and not just a single metal tube facing and/or pointing toward the burner.

If there is an assembly, likely to be one since a gas is present and you can see a flame flicker, a pilot can be lit. Once lit, there is also likely to be a red push button reset on a control valve somewhere in a storage compartment next to or beneath the oven, under the broiler or under the burner top lid cover.

Not all models will have a red reset push button. Most did but some did not. This will be known after the pilot flame is lit. The oven temp control will be set to a temp but oven will not light up.

What then needs to be done is to turn off oven temp control. Red reset button will than need to be located, pressed in, held in for a about 45 seconds or more and gently released.

If oven lights without any need to push in any reset button, there isn't any reset button. Safety device will be heated by a larger pilot flame which lights off the smaller pilot flame when oven temp selection dial is turned on to a temp setting.

Some also have optional selections and setting in the clock or on the front panel. All of which have to be set to the manual mode or off, etc.

Some models did not have any constant burning pilot. No pilot light assembly. Just a metal tube with a small flame extending from it. These types are "manual light" ovens.

You have to manually light the ovens burner initially upon usage. Usually done through the lighting hole in the front of the oven as you mentioned. There is "NO" safety device on theses types. Just a small constant burning flame near the burner on the back left side of the burner.

Models varied widely between manufacturers and models, etc. Look closely for optional selections and or settings and set accordingly.
