:help::help:Here is the previous post, I received no replies. If I could get help starting the refinish I would appreciate it. Thanks
:confused:OK,so I want to restain my 48" solid oak non claw foot pedestal table with 12" leaf. It now has a honey oak type finish and I want to stain it with medium cherry finish to match new cabinets. I know the table was finished with tung oil as my husband and I finished it originally. My question/questions are
1. How do I procede?
a. I know I need to take it apart
b. Do I clean with mineral spirits or what?
c. How do I strip the previous stain or do I sand or do I
stain over?
d. I have a couple of dark rings that I think I can use
oxalic acid to lighten, is that correct?
e. This is a kitchen table, used for many things
(eating,grandchildren painting, coloring etc), what
is the best finish for this? I would really like one
that is more foolproof than poly, sand, poly, sand
as that has never been my forte.
Thanks in advance for all the assistance. We are near the end of our remodel and due to my husband's job being eliminated b/c of economy, I am trying to do as much of this myself as possible. I have refinished furniture in the past. Brands of good products to use would be appreciated.

you will need to remove all the tung oil and old stain. you could try mineral spirits but you may need a stripper to pull all of it out.
since you want to go darker, you could try wiping a stain over the top. Make sure you wipe all the excess off. If you don't want to risk it looking bad, use a stripper to pull out the old stain and then wood bleach / oxcilic acid to even out the wood color.
the easiest way to finish the table is the tung oil but it has little durability. if you want somthing more durable then you need to put a poly on it. this means poly, sand, poly, sand, poly, buff.
