HI;
I did a base coat of veneer plaster on this wall that had some patching on it. I used Kal-coat Veneer base. I troweled it out very thin, about 1/16". I've never worker anywhere near that thin before, but it went on fine. Here is what it looks like 8 hours later:

Does it looks like I am on the right track for what a Veneer base coat should be doing? This was old plaster wall, that was well covered with plaster bonder.

I just did something very similar, mine looked about the same. Did you do a finish coat? Do you use bonder between the base and finish coat if the base has dried completely? Did you have any cracks appear?

I am doing finish on that very wall this afternoon, lime is soaking right now. I will post photos on this site when that wall is done. no bonder on the base so we will see very shortly...

HI;
Here is the update, and answer to a couple questions AJgeobiker (http://forum.doityourself.com/members/363595-ajgeobiker) asked about what how this worked. The Keenes did not make a good bond to the veneer base coat. The veneer base coat was very thin on this wall. I played with it for 2 hours last night and I could get the first coat on just fine, but when I went to double back and lay on the plaster, it just didn't work.
Keep in mind I don't have any gauging plaster because I have to drive about a 5 hour trip to get to the closest supplier that has it. But I am not sure that would make any difference in it not adhering to the wall. I have tested applying keenes over a glued wall multiple times now with Larsens plaster weld and with USG plaster bonder, and if it is possiable, it is not something you want to try.
I had a bag of USG veneer finish here, so I mixed that up to play with, I used the wrong drill and the wrong mixer, and whiped some air into it. I did apply it to a wall, and it went on just fine. I ended up with some pin holes in it, very tiny. But I didn't have any trouble getting it smooth as glass. It had to trouble at all with the same wall that the keenes didn't want to stick to. Not sure why, maybe my veneer was a bit too thin on that wall and there was glue that messed with the adhesion.
So I may end up using some more veneer finish coat for my walls since it worked so well for me. I have a big tub of (100#) of 50 Keenes 50Lime made up, and have been retemering it, I am thinking about adding sand in the morning and seeing if I can get it to bite to the veneer on the ceiling (it is much thicker than the veneer on the wall was).
Thanks
Jamie

Sorry,
I didn't get here soner.
The pictures show two different colors. Is the lighter area dried out before it set? Or did it dry out more than the darker area but set, or has it not set yet but did before you finished?
If the wall dried out before it set and you tried to finish it with Keenes that might explain why you couldn't double it up. The plaster came loose when you went over it with the second pass of Keenes
