I had new oak flooring installed about 1.5 years ago and I am really disappointed about the color being too light. Is there any way to darken the oak without sanding and refinishing? I read some where that ammonia can darken oak, has anyone heard of this or tried it? Do you think I could rub straight ammonia into the floor to darken it??

Hold on there with that ammonia talk. It will turn your floor dark- but only in the seams, and it will be black. It will also ruin the finish. Is the floor a polyurethane finish? If so, then sanding is the only proper way to change the color. It's probably not a wax finish, but if it were, you could just use a dark wax to change the color.
