I have a very old large bench vise, and one of the internal parts that is cast, and tapped for a mild steel bolt to screw into has broken where the bolt screws into such. It is split down the middle of the internal threads.
I have a 3/8" X 16 thread per inch stud that I would like to WELD to the cast part where it is broken.
Can this be done with SOME SUCCESS?
Thank You,
Dale in Indy

Ive never tried it, but a quick google search hit a lincoln electric site about it. One alternative method they mention is to drill and tap some holes around the 'break' (in your case, hole), install steel screws/etc, then weld your object (or plate etc) to the screws. Then its steel/steel, with the mechanical connection to the cast instead.
I thought it was a neat approach, so I posted.
Hope it helps.

Dave, THANKS for your input, FOR SURE.......
I am a good fabricator and I also considered drilling, and inserting a screw, and may do such.
I will just call a couple welding shops here in Indy and see how positive they are in helping me out.
Thanks again Dave,

I'm no expert when it comes to welding but I have a maddox that's made of cast steel and I broke it about 10yrs ago. The 'experts' said you can't weld cast steel and I was talking to a buddy of mine and he said 'it's already broke, welding won't hurt it' so I ground it down, welded it with my arc welder and while I don't use it every day [or week] it's still usable:D
just my 2 cents

I saw your post shortly after you made it but wanted to see if anyone had a positive experience with what you want to do.
Cast is difficult enough to weld but cast to steel would not work.

I will take it to a welding shop that a welding supplier recommends, and will POST what I learn.
Thanks to all though.

The best way to "weld" to cast iron is brazing, the joints may have to be ground away to get enough material to make it strong, but it will be very strong.
