We just bought a house. It needs A LOT of work and like most 1st time home buyers, we a short on cash. The biggest priority is new windows, which does not leave much $ left over for flooring.
The area we are seeking to change out the flooring is in a hallway that provides direct entry into the garage and to the bath/laundry room and to the kitchen. It is a small space, so I want to put in one kind of flooring for all three areas (hall, bath/laundry room, and kitchen) so it does not seem so chopped up. But the same time, we hope to gut the kitchen, which will include re-orienting the kitchen and we will actually cut off the access to the kitchen from that hallway by putting up a wall where there is currently a doorway.
So here is the question: Should we just live with the ugly floor that is there until we remodel the kitchen and then put down new flooring in the hall and bath/laundry, or should we go ahead and re-do the bath/laundry and hall floor, but leave the kitchen? We need to do this before we move in. I can only imagine what a PITA it is unhook and move a washer and dryer in order to lay down a vinyl floor...

If you have remodel plans in the not too distant future, I would wait until that time to do the flooring change. One....you will have to redo it all in time....Two....you will have more money to do all you want to do by that time. By then, too, you will have had time to decide on what type flooring you want to install.

You are in the same boat as we were about 4 yrs ago!! We had asbestos flooring, and it was tearing our socks b/c it was popping up. So I replaced it w/ 12x12 vinyl tiles!! They work great, easy to install and last! If one gets damaged, rip it up and put a new one down.
I personally would wait on the kitchen floor if your only going to be remodeling your kitchen. We are but its been 4 yrs and we haven't gotten to it yet but we are about a yr away. If the floor is only ugly to look at, then I would wait, but if your tripping over your flooring or provides other problems w/ kids, etc, then replace it now w/ the cheapest vinyl tile you can find.
I little advice from me who has done the kitchen (295sq ft.) and our master bath (125 sq. ft), put a dab of liquid nail or other approved adhesive to the back of each tile on the corners and one in the center!! They are really sticky, but I wanted ours to stay down for 5 yrs b/c I heard they start popping up on you after a yr or 2 but for me that isn't true!
Also when you cut these, use a super sharp utility knife, straight edge, and cut on a nice soft piece of pine. Had to change my utility blade about 3 times to put down 300+ tile.
GOOD LUCK
