Outdoor Power Equipment and Small Engines - Does my B/S engine have an oil filter?!?!?! And a fuel leak problem...

Purchased a used riding lawn mower, Eagle Star 15.5 hp 43" cut, no manual. I went to the hardware store and got parts for a tune up, i.e. air filter, fuel filter, new belts/blades, and the clerk got me an oil filter also. I thought it must have been used in this model because I gave him the engine info, but now I can't see where it could possibly be, and can't find the info anywhere. the model # is 28n707 code 0113 01.

There also appears to be a fuel leak towards the front of the engine. It's just dripping out, but consistent enough to leave about a one foot wide circle on the cardboard beneath it constantly wet. I'm a beginner with things like this, so I"m not sure how to go about checking to see if there is a carb problem or if the fuel lines are cracked/leaking. I just need some direction for where to check. Any suggestions?

The guy selling you the filter obviously does not look at a parts list. Yours does not use a filter. Will he take it back?
You need to do a systematic check fore the fuel leak. The best way to start is remove the air filter assembly. Where is the wet spot on the engine? Is the fuel line damp? Check where the fuel line plugs on to the carburetor. Is gas running down the carb bowl? Maybe the gasket is at fault. If the gas is pouring out the air inlet on the carb, there is an internal problem and the carb needs to be torn down and inspected.

Yes, there is an oil filter on your engine. Should be located on the lower side of the engine.
Gas leak could be a number of things. Cracked gas line is common on older tractors. Heat from the engine hardens them.
Start by looking at the carb and work your way back up the gas line until it looks dry. That would be where you leak is.

:confused: I just looked at the IPL.

I didn't think it did at first either. But when I looked at the "cylinder head-rocker cover-intake manifold-oil pump-oil filter" section, there it was. Filter #492932S.

so if it does have a filter, where is it located? Just from looking at it, I can't see where it would be, and I don't have a manual to look at. I saw the b/s IPL, but that doesn't really show me where it is supposed to be located on the engine, or I just am that dense that I can't make sense of it. Is there some sort of cover for it? I thought it would be screw off and screw on. Looks that way on the ipl...:wall:

If it says that the oil pump is used on the types listed above, does that mean that my type 0113 does not have one, and therefore does not have the oil filter???

Check your date code, which I don't see posted.

Here is a photo of where the filter is located. This photo is a 15.5 B&S engine#28N777. Very close to your engine. Oil filter is the black round thing in back of the red gas filter.

Thanks. There is no filter in the same location on my mower, so I'm guessing that there must not be one.

The code # for the engine is 9502014A
