We recently moved to a house and the gas water heater is not providing hot water. We do have a pilot light burning, but the burner never kicks on. Any thoughts?

Make sure that the control knob on top of the gas valve is turned to the "ON" position. It could be set to "PILOT". If so the burner can not come on. This is an energy saving position if the heater will not be used for a period of time.

Or a bad thermocoupler -- CERTAINLY a lot cheaper than a gas valve!!

Lefty...but they have a lit pilot..doesn't that eliminate the thermocouple?

1) check to be sure that the selector control is turned to the on position ---if it's in the pilot position the main burner will not turn on.

2) Turn the thermostat control up. If it's set too low, the main burner will not turn on.

yep didnt think to ask the op if they tried turning it up to see if it kicked on but i thought that would be self explainatory even to the most novice of all. you know, no hot water so try turning up the heat. i havent heard anyone not try that first but you never know
