We have a house with 20 years old cedar shake siding that does not appear to have ever been treated or painted in any way. It is ugly and badly stained. We want to paint or stain it to achieve a uniform color. What is the best way to achieve this -- paint or stain? oil or latex? primer or no primer? P.S. we have already tried an oil based solid stain on part of the house and after two coats it appears blotchy.
