I have a Heat-n-Glo direct vent fireplace that vents through the side wall. I'd like to seal and insulate the area around the vent pipe where it goes to the outside, but as I understand it, I need a 1 inch clearance around the pipe everywhere. Which means no insulation or foam or anything can be in contact with the vent pipe.

The outside piece is well caulked, and on the inside there is a metal plate attached to the inside wall, through which the vent pipe passes.

I found a DAP Polyurethan Fireblock Foam Sealant and was wondering if this would be an acceptable product to use in the area between the inside plate and the outside vent cap for sealing and insulating?

If not, am I limited to caulking the vent pipe and creating some kind of box between the inside and outside wall to act as an air break? If necessary, I can do this, and caulk all the places where the box comes together, the vent pipe goes through the wall, and all that, but it'd sure be easier to foam this whole setup....

What's the best way to handle this?

DO NOT USE DAP fireblock. It is to help slow a fire from going floor to floor in a house fire. It does burn!!

The best thing you can do is to seal all the cracks between the pipe and wall/thimble using some high temp caulk. That way no air will be able to move between the outside and inside.
