I just got off the phone with one of the well known appliance companies. I told them my local appliance store wants $45 for a cheap 9 inch black plastic hanldle for an Amana over- the- stove- Radarange microwave. $45 for some cheap piece of plastic held on by 2 screws. Come on!

So I called the company and the lady said they can't do anything about it. I told them I thought companies wanted to be competive and have an edge over a competitor and make sure customers are satisfied. I told her $15 would even be an outrageous rip-off, but I'd be willing to pay that. I told her I can get an electronic computer keyboard for like $15! She heard me out, but did not know what to say (because she knew I was right). I asked to speak to a supervisor who would be able to answer me why they charge so much - and she said there was nobody I could talk to. We ended the fruitless call.

I then tried E-Bay, but do not find the part. I did look up advertisers, even those associated with E-Bay, and I can get the part for up to $7.50 less, but then the time I pay for the shipping amount they list, I am up to the same figure the local appliance store is charging!

I would be willing to even get a used handle.

Anybody have any ideas of some company in this country where I can find out if they have such a part?

And my advice to all of you is when you are thinking of buying a new appliance, first think what certain parts on that unit are that are likely to go bad, then call up your appliance parts store and find out what you are going to have to pay for that part. If one company seems to have outrageous prices on replacement parts, I would not buy any of their products. None. Never. And let as many people as I could about that. Very, very poor customer relations to do that to customers who bought their product in the first place! Don't they want repeat business? What kind of corporation thinks they can be successful doing this to people?

Another example I gave to the lady was how Gibson (White Consolidated) wants $65 for only the 3 sides of a cheap plastic crisper drawer that was not designed (likely on purpose) to handle a bunch of potatoes, etc., in the drawer - as the top edge that rides on the guide is like 1/32 inch thick plastic that breakes on every fridge!! The Amana lady said SHE has a Gibson fridge, and HER drawer is broke. See? And they(the company) is so cheap they will not include the clear plastic front of the drawer, and you have to carefully remove that from your old drawer to install on the new drawer.

You see, most people would have no idea that if they ever needed such a seemingly simple and cheap part that it would ever cost anywhere nears that amount. And the extra sad part is they have not redesigned the design flaw and the new unit might break just like the old one. You might even break it trying to insall the front! And surely would if you had kids grabbing and sliding open those drawers. Aaaarrrrgggghhh!

Hopefully I have educated some of you, and you wil be buyer beware.

And hopefully someone can help me out here.

I came back to say that at one time, we had 3 used appliance stores in town that sold reconditioned large appliances and parts off them. Now there is none.

If any of you know of any large used appliance store around you, in your state, or otherwise know of such an outfit, that I could contact, that be great.

....................................................

Silly me, in my frantic haste and anger during my lunch hour, here it turns out tons of listings about used appliances are on the web, so I will be also searching, on my own. But feel free to offer any tips from perhaps your own experiences.

We always buy our stuff from the same place. Often, they have something sitting waiting to be picked up and hauled away and they'll let us take pieces off for free, if we can find one which will work for us.

Great idea. Sounds like one of our lock shops in town. The guy has a cache of every known lock part known to man, laying buried somewhere in his shop. He has helped me many times. Yet, another lockshop that makes lots of money almost laughs at me if I ask them if say they have a latch laying around for some lock. They said they can't afford to fill up their store with used stuff and sell it for a $1 or whatever. They said there is no money in that.

We don't have any more used appliance stores in town. And new appliance retailers do not stockpile old stuff either.

I can get it for you. The appliance store has the info on it. I will call them back tomorrow and find out.

I have an internet outfit I repsonded to, and they claim they will let me know in 72 hours if they have or can get the part. I can't wait to see if they even respond.

Oh, the model # of the Amana microwave is MVH210E. I could actually find the exploded parts breakdown on the web, like I did yesterday, but I'm afraid I can't do it tonight due to time constraints.

part number Y05200194 - $28.34 plus $4.95 shipping is the best I can find.

The lowest price I see on any microwave door handle is $11.60 (plus shipping) and it is for a Dacor brand microwave. I suspect the cost of a Dacor microwave would more than negate the savings on parts. The going rate on microwave handles seems to be between $25 and $50.

Have you considered epoxy?

Thanks Doug. The part number for the Amana handle for already said model # is 4414 the appliance place just told me minutes ago, when I called them back.

$34 is better than $45 + tax. But still quite the rip-off. Hmmm. What to do?

I still have not heard from that internet outfit I e-mailed, that claim they can get parts new and used the cheapest. They claim they respond to e-mails within 72 hours.

Epoxy? Or even plastic super glue? Yes. But the thing is it is for an $800 a month rental and there is a chunk missing out of the lower part of the handle. And if I use that super glue, then how might I ever get the handle to come off if we ever try to get it off? That super glue I told you about is a special super glue that is a one of a kind invention that is the only stuff that advertises to be able to glue the previously unglueable polybutyene and polyethylene plastics, that epoxies and other glues do not stick to! Those are the plastics used for those like Fisher-Price wagon toys and other 'oily type' plastic that is unbondable. And yes, that superglue DOES work. We tried it on that plastic and it comes with that primer in a glass tube that you snap open like when you reglue on rearview mirrors - and it actually fusebonded that oily plastic!
