Hello all: I have replaced a sink in a small bathroom and in the process of removing the sink several wall tiles came with! The contractor had attached the sink to the wall with 4" bolts and construction adhesive...The drywall paper also came with it - right down to the gypsum core...
I have replaced the damaged drywall section (30" x 13"), taped the joints, covered the joints with joint compound, sanded and cleaned the entrire drywall section. There is still pleanty of raw drywall visible.
Can I apply thinset mortar and tile driectly over the areas with joint compound or do I need to treat/prime the areas with joint compound first?
If so, what is typically used to treat/prime for wall tiling?
Many thanks!

It's better to prime first. I imagine Zinser would be fine.

I agree, good advice pulpo, that drywall needs to be sealed before thinset is applied.
