Outdoor Power Equipment and Small Engines - Starter Clutch Removal - Briggs 170402

I need to change the starter clutch on an old Briggs motor. I can see that the clutch needs to be threaded on to the crankshaft however how do I get the old one off without breaking anything. Also, is it left hand or right hand thread ?? I read the filed posts on this subject however I didnt see one that described the proper way to remove it. As always, thanks in advance.

A special tool is needed to remove and install the clutch. An ingenious person could improvise I am sure. Correct torque when installing clutch is critical to prevent flywheel key shearing.

Airman -- thank you -- terrific info -- I was able to get it off using a large slip joint pliers and a piece of wood. Certainly not as elegant as the tool in the post. Would you happen to know what the proper torque is.
