Ihave a 20 year old oak dining table. I recently put the leaf in for the first time in a long time. Since removing it after use, I have been unable to close the gap where the leaf had been. How can I go about adjusting the expansion pieces so the tabletop closes up?

A silicone lubricant usually works well in these cases. Should be available from a hardware or big box store.
