How far back do you sharpen a lawn mower mulching blade from the outer ends?

You only need to sharpen the distance it was when new, Any further will gain you little. The grass will be cut with the outer edge before ever getting to the center anyway.

There are a few different designs in mulching blades, The difference between a mulching blade and a standard lift blade is the amount of lift.

Most mulching blades are low lift, Meaning they don't form as much vacuum under the deck and pull the grass blades up before cutting them.

A standard blade has a lift wing on the back edge to form a better suction under the deck to straighten the grass blades up before cutting.

The largest problem with standard or high lift blades is the more vacuum you have under the deck the more sand is pulled from around the grass. This causes more wear on the deck and blade it's self and will eventually wear the deck thin enough for holes to start forming, Then the deck must be patched/replaced to keep sand from blowing all over yourself while mowing.
