We bought primered mdf doors (6 panel), and on the advice of a local pro shop got some gel stain (I think it was flecto/rustoleum). You cant get an even finish (you are after all trying to get a stain to set into a primer on a fake texture of wood grain..), so you have to go with an 'antique' look.. like the door has been around for a long while, has natural slightly lighter and darker areas. I put some gel on a brush, swept it along as far as I could, then back brushed it to get close to an even depth with the other areas, doing one 'section' at a time.
I think they look great.
Just my 002 tho..

Correction: It was Old Masters Gel Stain. Found the can in the shop earlier.. found the web site.. man, that stuff will even stick to plastic and fiberglass apparently.. lol
