I am considering buying a "lock" floor from Mirage for floating installation, but dislike the spongy feeling with the foam underlayment that is part of their store display sample (likely their recommended product). We like wide boards and have very variable humidity and think a floated floor would work best in terms of keeping the seams tight.
Can the floor be floated onto a less spongy underlayment? Like (red) resin paper? The subfloor is 3/4in tounge and groove fir plywood glued and nailed 24in on center. Would a less spongy underlayment create problems, like squeaks, hollow feeling, expansion problems? What other underlayments would folks suggest for a less spongy feel?

there are many underlayments you can choose. look into a silent floor underlayment.
