First, I am familiar with 1144 weldability...

I have a part that has an axel made of 1144 stressproof rod. For years we have held this rod in position with two welds 1/2" long welds that are offset from each other by 1" along the length of the shaft to avoid cracking. The latest batch the welder screwed-up and welded almost completely around the circumference of the axel (about 300+ degrees). NO special 1144 techniques like pre or post heating were used. This error was not caught until after the parts have been powder coat painted so visual inspection for cracking is not very helpfull.

With an overhung and vibrating load on the end of this shaft what is your guess that the shaft will fail? I assume the shaft will eventually break at the weld.
