Designing Kitchens and Bathrooms - how much tile do i tear out from a shower just to replace pan

help me please, i have a small walk in shower that needs a new shower pan. i had a local company come and quote me for a entire shower redo. but i think i just need to replace maybe half of the lower tiles,ect and shower pan please help with my question

If 4x4 tiles, you could probably get by with taking off the bottom 2-3 courses, if it is not a mud wall. But redoing the whole thing is sometimes the right way to do it.

Typically, the shower pan liner goes up the walls 3" above the finished height of the curb. Then cement board, or mud walls go over the liner and extend down to just a little bit off the pan. Probably you have cement board, hopefully not drywall.

You will have to remove enough tile to be able to cut away the cement board minimum of 12" to 18" above the top of the pan liner. The reason that you have to go that high, is that you must be able to screw new cement board to the studs above the liner. There should be no screw penetrations in the liner, so you need enough screws above the liner to make it nice and solid.

Keep in mind that the tile wont come off easy and will not be salvagable. Do you have enough extra tile, or can you still buy it?

My thoughts are that you are probably better off gutting that shower and starting over with everything new. If its as you say, a small shower, it probably wont cost all that much more to do the whole shower.

How do you make the corners fit for tile?
Do you just fold the corners?
